Home Made Thundergod

So I was thinking of a warmup to do today and I came upon an idea I had in passing last night while watching Iron Man on dvd.

I was sitting there thinking about Iron Man leading the Avengers which lead me to thinking about the Ultimates comic when Thor kinda went awol. I had the thought that Tony Stark would come up with his own answer to containing Thor or even replacing him if need be. So by using technology he creates his own Thunder God-like being whom he dubs Thunderstrike (The Ultimates version of Eric Masterson).

Anyhow. This is what I came up with this morning.

Couple new ones

Just some linework I tested out inking in Flash. noooot gonna do that again. The linework is so jaggedy it's not even funny. Flash good for smaller pieces. Larger pieces not so much.

And a Spidey I threw down on break today at work.

Wild sketchin'

I realized recently, I just plain don't sketch enough. I'm always trying to complete a piece and while that's good for productivity, it's killing the hell out of my spontaneity and we can't have that. So here's a rough sketch I did of Grifter today.

Seriously...I wish I didn't have to clean up work always loses so much personality between the sketch and the final work. Meh.

Jungle Hero v02

I felt that bg looked too sparse. Fillin' in some o'that ruffage thar.

Jungle Hero

Decided to do up a supergirl sketch today...aaand somehow she ended up in the jungle.

It's another lineart piece I may color someday. Not sure when. Probably after I add more background elements and such.

La Jolla Kids

Haven't drawn the Gen13 kids in forever and they still stand up as one of my favorite books of the 90's. And since they were in the 90's and I STILL love the books, that's gotta say a lot for those books.

SDCC Print

Well I won't have a table to sell anything, but my dear pal Christina Strain (she who walks with awesomeness) is coloring this piece up as a Print. Until then this is my version of the colors.

I just love this couple as does Christina. Which I find odd because Rogue and Gambit are complete opposites who have such a hard time getting together, but Christina and her Fiance are an amazing couple who you couldn't separate with Wolverine's claws.

Couple of Kittens

I dunno why, other than online fun but I've been drawing Tigra (Avengers) a lot lately.

Break Time Sketchin

Saw the new trailer for the Clone Wars animated and y'know I'm still a bit hesitant about it, but still might be fun. It did manage to tickle my Star Wars giddiness so here's a 20 minute break time sketch of Obiwan being his badass self.

Moment of Silence - Harvey Korman

One of the most brilliant comedians AND actors that ever lived passed away yesterday. Harvey Korman brought us some of the great villainies in Mel Brooks' films as well as helped birth sketch comedy in its modern incarnation via the Carol Burnett show. He will be missed.

So I found out about Dynamo 5

Well after going back over what I could have done to screw up Dynamo 5 so much I finally looked at my e-mails to Jay Faerber and my big screwup...I totally sent him the wrong files and dear lord I feel dumb. I sent him RGB JPG's and anyone who's worked in printed medium knows that pretty much anything JPG is a dumb idea and RGB is just a flat out no no.

So anyone who bought the Dynamo 5 Annual, please don't judge the whole book by my 8 pages of Oops. Here's a couple pages to satiate the concept of what the colors SHOULD have looked like if I wasn't a dimwit.

Another Not Art Post. OMG...

I really need to cut back on projects. What kills me the most is that I've been incredibly busy since early 2007. Almost non-stop. Yet the projects I keep taking on are small little things that I'm probably not getting paid for. Which is fine I guess since I do have my animation day job which I love.

It's just...I look out and I see that I have one book on shelves this week. Another one next month. Two the following month, and one more in August.

And so far, none of it is stuff I'm really proud of. Why you ask? Because My dayjob has semi-flexible hours. I work at least 8 hours a day doing my animation/web job in an office environment.

Then I come home to work on the comic but also work on little things here and there that are projects just piled up. A company here wants 6 concepts done for a project they don't tell me about. Don't care, I'm getting paid. Right? Ugh. But those 6 concepts are matched by other commissioned work on top of the day job. On top of the comic, on top of the anthology, on top of the annual, on top of the trading cards...and in the end...

you wind up with half assed work and I HATE THAT! I hate that all this work I've done over the last year really doesn't reflect what I can do. It reflects what I can do under pressure, but not really the quality I want to deliver.

So I keep telling people that I'm not taking any more freelance work, but I think that's overstating. I'm just not taking on lil projects. If it's a writer I know and respect or a publisher I know and respect I'll work something out. But these little cards, concepts, covers, pinups and whatnot...I gotta step away from it and just keep saying I dun' have zee time.

Cuz my brain is turning into mush.

I wonder if this ever happens to Travis Charest...

You know...I'm beginning to question if anyone will ever know who I am in the comics world. lol it's a silly thing I know, but in pretty much every promotional piece done where my name is included, I get misspelled.

Mathew Humphries is pretty much the most common spelling I come across.

My name is Matthew Humphreys. Two T's and an EYS on the end. It'll be hilarious one day when some kid is going to look back and wonder "Hmmm who was that guy that drew that thing one time." And they'll look it up based on my name on the cover Matthew Humphreys, but they won't find anything because all materials relating to me will be with an IES...guh.

Here's a random thing I came by today. I had come across some Brian Stelfreeze art the other day and I wanted to look at more of his recent stuff since I hadn't heard about him in years. So I check out to see if he has a gallery. Voila he does and what do I find there, some hilarity in accidental 'tracing' done I'm guessing on my part.

I KNOW Stelfreeze doesn't know who the hell I am and I had never seen his piece before today so I thought it was just a funny quirk of the cosmos at how similar our two pieces were.

His from a series called Gun Candy (makes sense with the items in his piece) and mine was a piece called 'Happy Holidays All' featuring Lara Croft as a holiday post on my Deviantart Gallery this past Xmas.

Weirdness and hilarity in the world.

Marvel Masterpiece Cards

Huge file! Sorry.

Anyhow, here's my cards for the Marvel Masterpiece sketch card set. Honestly, I really didn't get my groove until about the 2nd half of cards. Serves me right for not drawing on paper for a long long time. Anyhow, this was a lot of fun.

Storm, Gwen Stacy, She-Hulk
Rogue, Mystique, Emma Frost
Tigra, Nico Minoru, Black Widow (had to do at least one card in that style)

Dr Strange, Spidey, Vulture
Nick Fury, Beast, J.Jonah Jameson

Stray Cat Strut

So I'm not an animator by definition. I do animation at my work which tend to be fairly simplified flash animations. But still they take forever to do because I A)Never went to school for animation all. and B)I'm still learning flash every day of work.

So out of a need to self-improve I've been monkeying with animation on my own time trying to see how much I can do without any training in animation.

Here's my first major outing which is still in a very rough draft. This may turn into a lot more depending on how enthused I am once cleanup is done on this scene. I may possibly extend this into several scenes strung together in what some could call a short film or what I'll call brain vomit.

Anyhow, here's my favorite lil minx, Catwoman doing what she does.

the file is kinda on the huge side...

Nother Commission

The client's original character whom I believe was a dancer turned magically into a marionnette.

Commission - Fathom

Never drew this gal before. Aspen Matthews from Fathom. I apologize for the watermark, but since commissions are obviously paid for, I only allow the owner to have a printable version.

You dropped yo iiiice cream...

Did up tonight as a quicky for a thread on and as for the light palette and lack of shading, my friend Bob Strang has this amazing style that utilizes these deceptively simple colors that just breathe so much life into his work that I was hoping to pull it off.

I've also been reading a shitload of art books from classic animated films as well as newer films. There's just something to behold in animation that has no shading and still looks alive.

Love'em To Death

My gesture towards suggesting that the only way to stop huge talents like Chamba or Von Toten is to kill them. But I'm a nice guy so I left them some company by their graves.

Stars and Stripes

Had a few extra hours to muck around drawing tonight between work stuff. Soooo ended up with a catgirl in space. Still trying to figure out my background painting stuff. I really want it to end up looking like the old Disney movies with heavily rendered bgs...I may have to try a different program than photoshop for my bg's since for the last umpteen million years I just can never figure out the digipainting in photoshop. Maybe Open Canvas will do something for me.

Homage to one of the sexiest gals ever to grace animation. Chel from Dreamworks' Road to El Dorado

A warm-up sketch that went further than intended. This originally was gonna be a nude, but I decided against in the end. I like to keep nudity to a minimum in my work.

Sorry folks haha.

Darn those (in)convenient winds during dastardly team-ups.

Just a warm up that went a little further than expected before diving into work stuff tonight.

Gettin Dirty in 2008

For the first post of 2008, I bring you two of the hottest and best bad girls in the universe. The Dirty Pair.

I love these girls. Despite my long time love of anime, these two were my first foray into printed japanese artwork. Oddly enough the books I picked up were from a man who will continue to influence and inspire me as years go on. Adam Warren.

Dirty Pair:Sim Hell changed how I viewed comics and how they COULD be told.
