Pole Smokin'

So this is a redraw of an older piece I did for an art book some very amazing artists are putting together. I submitting the piece months ago and then my computer exploded. Later I found out they never received my high resolution copy. So I figured since I'd need to redraw it in a 300dpi format for them to print the piece, I might as well kick up the colors a little from before.

For my fellow Avatards out there.

Just a diddy I worked up during lunch and breaks at work. Total of about 35 minutes work I think. I have a friend at work who is a recent convert to being an Avatard. And as a celebration of her enlightenment I have made her into an Earth Bender.

Villainy in short order

Mademoiselle Angora L'Petite Mal

Upcoming you'll be seeing a lot of this gal in the pages of Battlefield Babysitter. A diminutive villainess with a speech impediment and a penchant for all things bunny related. What's her interest in Katherine or little Benjamin? We'll have to wait and see.

Battlefield Babysitter in the works

Well since there's every chance that High Moon will win Zuda's first monthly competition (Awesome job to the creative team of HM btw) I wanted to start posting some updates to my blog about what'll be happening with Battlefield Babysitter and give you a brief peek into what's coming.

I know that the 8 page intro on Zuda doesn't get into the Battlefield nor the Babysitting of the story. That said, strip 9 would've actually just introduced the parents and the ward of the babysitting side of the story.

The parents being Garrison Davis (Aka Baron Dark) a non-powered Superhero who is sort of an internal catalyst for why Katherine's parents are obsessed with her getting powers. Baron Dark and Silverback used to be partners but because of Baron's lack of superhuman abilities, they had a falling out as Silverback felt they should be handling bigger issues than street crime.

Ironically Silverback and family are still B-list heroes who do handle local adversaries, while Baron Dark has gone onto becoming a true thorn in the side of supervillainy.

His wife is a super-being who didn't get into the superhero caste by choice. She's actually a supermodel who goes by the stage name of Athena, but her real name is Arlene Davis a loving wife and an emotional counterpoint to the usually stern Garrison.

Then there's their child. Benjamin. Obviously too young to manifest, his parents aren't sure where he'll be in their world in the years to come, but they're very protective of him.

But on a night out they make an agreement with old friend Silverback to try and bridge the gap in their friendship by allowing Katherine to babysit while the two sets of parents head out for a Superhero gala event.

So thaaat's just the next few pages. There's a lot more to come. But until then here's a peek at Athena with her little boy, Benjamin.

A little sky in your doll

I just switched up my desktop wallpaper recently with a Claire Wendling rendition of Noa from Sky Doll in this fantastic pose with this huge fluffy hair and it was just so...80's. I love it.

So I started out doing an homage to this piece by utilizing a similar pose but from a different angle and it just took off and turned into an homage to both Wendling and the Sky Doll volume 'Aqua'.

Bionic Woman

Non-Art post here tonight...About the new Bionic Woman series.

I was iffy at the pilot feeling like people were getting their legs under them with their characters...but by tonight the 2nd/3rd episode(I will explain) still no life in this puppy at all.

Honestly, you have a severely traumatized character who can't even manage to show a single emotion without having some sort of Keanu reaction to it. Old school Keanu, not new school emo Keanu.

"I'm sad so I shall wallow and talk to myself...but rather than having it be introspective and deep I shall talk monotone as though I'm having a conversation about my latest bank statement."

"I'm happy. I will show all my teeth and act like 200 people didn't just die ten minutes ago."

"I'm angry so I shall grunt and bounce around."

Seriously. I had initially thought it was because the lead actress is british. Or seemed to be in early preview work and was just struggling with an American Accent. Nope. She actually sucks at acting. And when you surround her with a much better cast she just looks that much worse.

Layer on top of that the usual tripe that gets thrown in and guess what you have here...Jake 2.0 but not done nearly as well.

So about the episode numbering. You've had ONE episode air and the 2nd episode doesn't get's completely pulled from your roster and replaced with the third episode. Wait...what's that? That back there...OH that's the shark you just jumped way off on the horizon. Cuuuuuz at the end of episode 1 her boyfriend is still clinging to life. Episode 2/3...dead buried gone. He was TALKING on the gurney before. Oy. AND Episode 1 "I hate you, stay away from me or I'll kill everyone who send for me." Episode 2/3 "Heeeey...can I work for you?"

I do hope they take this proverbial Old Yellar out behind the barn and put a bullet in it. It seems like they realized that they had a crap show on their hands and all they could do with it is throw in actors that resident geeks(myself included) will recognize and squeal over from BSG and Firefly. Too bad that no matter how awesome that is, it's not enough to save this.

BLAM! Good night Old Yellar.

another quick one tonight

Another of Monet from Generation X in a more formal look. She's such a bitch and yet such a cutie...sad combination. Working at Neopets lately has made me a lot faster in drawing I tell ya. This was 20 minutes start to finish.

Couple of tidbits of X-girls

Haven't had much time to draw for meself lately, and while I'm behind on commissions a bit I don't have time to do full pieces.

So just a couple of small tidbits drawn and colored each in about 40 minutes.

Here's Jean Grey (a younger version. maybe Ultimate) and Monet St. Croix from Gen X fame.

Viva La Pipingrad!

I was doodling out the Goblin Queen from Marvel Comics on Thursday and was originally going to draw a dragon behind her to lean on. But after several attempts the Dragon kept looking ludicrously funny rather than scary.

So I dropped the dragon but maintained the funny thread and inserted a junkload of the Denizens including Jack from Phillip Jackson's Pipingrad

Threads of Fate

I had this idea a while ago that I will likely never do anything with...y'know since Cloak and Dagger are Copyright to Marvel Comics.

But I was thinking that there are these two characters that really aren't suited for superhero comics. I had thought of writing them out like a Marvel Max comic where they were following these new threads of fate that came out of Cloak and tried to rectify situations a la Dagger lighting the way.

Anyhow, figured I might as well throw out the design ideas anyhoodle.

Oh and before anyone asks, I know it's not Cloak or Dagger's regular costumes. I wanted his to feel more like a tether. Something that he's trapped in and her's to feel more like her origin which is as a dancer.

The differences with Photoshop

I used to simply draw with pencil, scan and color right over my pencils and thought it looked good.

Well a couple nights ago I proved that yeeaaaah, there's a slight difference between my pencil art and my photoshop finishes.

Here's a comparison. One is pencil with mouse/photoshop coloring. The other is photoshop lines and colors with a wacom.

Run Boy Run!

This is just a quick drawing/colored piece of an original character I designed for my own use. His name's Mercury. Guess what his power is and you may get a cookie.

Also this is another personal drawing of a character I was calling Spooky Chan. Just my visual iteration of how much I wish it were October.

Well I had to reinstitute the word verification mode on comments. I just can't stand comment bots. bleh.

Something quick tonight.

Getting to work on some stuff I won't be posting online for a while. So here's something I did as a quick warm up tonight. Something sexy and something gruesome...all in one.

Some new ladies

A little ditty I did the other night in an effort to transform Sun Wukong into a female version. The costuming is way off considering the color palette and the lacking of the tiger skin...but whatevs. It was fun designing a monkey girl.

Recent commission I did of someone's original character.

X-23. One of the few gals in comics I've never drawn. I have. I like how this one turned out. Even though it's pretty plain and simple.

Oh and I'm in the market for a gig. Anyone know of anything in the mix hit me up, please.

Billy Batson

You know, I figured that since I posted up my own Captain Marvel. I'd post up how I view Billy Batson these days. Personally I don't think he could be an 11 year old kid anymore considering that both Freddie Freeman and Marvel Batson have grown up. Billy should be a more contemporary teen at this point at the very least.

New Stuff

Put together a new portfolio to show to editors. It includes the Runaways pages seen below as well as some other stuff.

A couple new pieces that made it into the portfolio were these two.

Something else that kinda flogged my noggin. Deviantart is rampant with adult photography...and I mean A-D-U-L-T. But my gallery is pretty tame. At worst a PG-13 rated gallery unless you count foul language.

But in any case, I seem to have gotten pointed out for having one tastefully nude piece in my gallery. Mind you, no actual 'parts' are shown but somehow this got deleted as a violation of some overt sexuality clause. Yet photos seem to be posted daily of someone's birth canal. A lovely complex they have of hypocrisy on their site. Yeesh. Four years on that site and this is my first 'violation'. Sadness.

In any case, this was a commission and it got to the client just fine, so I have no TRUE qualms of it not being in my gallery. Just...y'know miffed at the double standard.

Runaways again

Doing these up again here because I realized shortly after I uploaded that there were some errors. Layers in the wrong spot causing overlapping fx and some colors that weren't consistent from panel to panel. So I went through and corrected what mistakes there were and added another page. I think I got about two more pages after these and this story's run it's course.

Atomic Chimp Issue 5

Despite designing this book from the get go, I'm starting my actual interior work for Atomic Chimp as of Issue 5. Kelsey Shannon and I will be trading off arcs to give us both breaks to work on other stuff as well as to keep the book on Schedule from the day of launch.

Anyhow, this is for Issue 5. Rendering to follow...I'm tired so no rendering tonight. Rendering tomorrow night. Don't hate me. Love me.

Conversations that end the universe

One of my two co-horts in Atomic Chimp and I were talking shop and then like Sam Kinnison on a bender, the conversation took a left turn and hit a telephone pole.

Me: Definately not a tactic I've ever seen before. Redrawing a series for the collected volume.
Greg: It'll also have new stuff in it.
Greg: Think of us as George Lucas.
Me: Why? I liked you before!
Greg: Yeah, but it's gonna be better.
Greg: Did you see The Passion of the Christ?
Me: Yeah.
Greg: Is there male nudity in it?
Me: Just Jesus.
Greg: But you see his ding-a-ling?
Me: I dun remember. I didn't spend a lot of time searching for the Lord's DingDing.
Greg: I've got a thing for nekkid Jesus.

It's not just me people!'s also the company I keep.

Spiders. I hate them just a little less now.

Creator Owned Projects

Here's a couple pinup lines for two creator owned projects I'm working on.

The first one being Sun God Samurai and the Second being Battlefield Babysitter. Both are copyrighted to Matthew Humphreys...uh you know, ME! Anyhow, enjoy.
